Kalai ("Ka-lie") learned guitar by watching his father, Danson, a Hawaiian music icon who's performed with Eric Clapton and Van Morrison. Born in Hawaii and raised in Alaska, Kalai won the Anchorage Youth Stars award when he was 17. His unique voice, composition and instrument skills at the 2000 Telluride Bluegrass Festival awarded him fourth place in songwriting out of 1200 applicants. He appears on the recent soundtrack "Welcome to Brigham" CD. His September debut album is entitled "Acoustacism." When he's not performing or recording in his studio in Alaska, an expert fly fisherman, Kalai's in the river catching rainbow trout and silver salmon.
